Will Smith asked to leave the Oscars, but refused, says Academy, as Chris Rock breaks the silence over slapping

Will Smith was asked to leave Sunday’s Oscar ceremony after beating Chris Rock, but refused, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has revealed.

The King Richard star stunned a star-studded Dolby Theater and a worldwide audience after hitting the comedian for joking with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Last night, Rock broke his silence over the incident at Sunday’s 94th Academy Awards, one of the most shocking in the history of the awards ceremony, saying he “still worked on” it.

Smith has met calls to get stripped of his Oscar and he may be subject to suspension, expulsion or other sanctions in an investigation conducted by the Academy’s board of directors, which has initiated disciplinary proceedings ”against the Men in Black actor.

A spokesman for the Academy said: “Things were evolving in a way we could not have foreseen.

“While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also acknowledge that we could have handled the situation differently.”

Smith can defend himself in a written response before the board meets on April 18th.

The academy also apologized to Rock, 57, calling Smith’s actions a “deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in person and on television.”

A spokesman added: “Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience at that moment.”

When he spoke about the slap for the first time at a sold-out show in Boston last night, Rock opened his number by asking the audience, “Soooo, how was your weekend ?!”

He then said, “‘Let me be completely foggy and s ***. I do not have a lot of s *** to say about it, so if you came here for it …

“I had written an entire show before this weekend.

“I’m still working on what happened, so at some point I’ll talk about it s ***. It’s going to be serious. It’s going to be fun, but right now I want to tell some jokes.”

Two villains shouted “Will Smith” during the show to loud buh, where a man was seen being dragged out by security guards, It reported Daily Mail.com.

Smith hit Oscar-hosted Rock in the face to mock Pinkett Smith’s “GI Jane” clip, a result of the hair loss condition alopecia.

After being hit by Smith, Rock exclaimed, “Oh wow. Will Smith just knocked the shit out of me.”

Smith then returned to his seat and shouted against an astonished rock, “Keep my wife’s name away from your damned mouth.”

Minutes after hitting Rock, Smith was back on stage after winning Best Actor for his role in King Richard.

He later apologized to Rock, saying he was “out of line and wrong”.
