Why did Will Smith hit Chris Rock? How a GI Jane joke about Jada Pinkett Smith prompted the 2022 Oscars

Will Smith slapped Oscar host Chris Rock in the faceafter the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Closed came minutes before Smith was presented his first Oscar everwho claims to be best actor for his role in King Richard.

People immediately questioned whether the incident was staged, but it appears to have been genuine.

Here’s exactly what happened and what happened before Smith hit Rock.

Why did Will Smith beat Chris Rock?

Rock entertained the audience on stage before the award for best documentary was handed out.

Smith and Pinkett Smith sat in the front of the audience, and Rock made a joke and asked Pinkett Smith if she would star in “GI Jane 2”.

The joke refers to Pinkett Smith shaving her head – as Demi Moore did for her role in the original GI Jane.

However, Pinkett Smith has also been very public about having alopecia, a medical condition that causes hair loss.

Smith at first seems to laugh, but then goes up on stage and punches Rock in the face.

After being hit, Rock exclaims, “Oh wow. Will Smith just knocked the shit out of me.”

Some members of the celebrity crowd are still laughing, perhaps thinking that the whole incident is a bit.

But the reaction turns into astonishing silence as Smith twice yells at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

Rock says he will, but seems visibly shaken and goes on to say “we’re here to present a documentary” before correcting himself.

What has Will Smith said about that?

Smith burst into tears after winning the Best Actor award, saying, “I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my co-nominees. This is a beautiful moment. I’m not crying to win an award.

“It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shed light on all people. Art mimics life, I look like the crazy dad, just like they said about Mr. Williams. Love makes you do crazy things. “

The LAPD said they were aware of the incident but that Rock had declined to report it.

A police spokesman said: “The LAPD’s investigative units are aware of an incident between two people during the Academy Awards program.

“The incident involved one person beating another.”

In a statement, the Academy said it “does not tolerate violence of any kind”.

A spokesman added: “Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Oscar winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and film lovers around the world.”
