Warning: This article contains spoilers for Moon Knights.
Oscar Isaac stars as Marvel’s newest superhero, Disney +’s Moon Knights, and here’s what you need to know about the MCU superhero. Isaac comes to MCU after starring in several high-profile Hollywood films over the past many years, is best remembered for playing Poe Dameron, one of the three main characters in Disney Star wars sequel trilogy. inevitably, Oscar Isaacs cast Moon Knights created a lot of buzz during the run-up to the show’s release.
Moon Knight has been compared to Marvel’s version of Batman because of his more brutal approach to superheroes than some of MCU’s other heroes. He is also a far more complex character, thanks to living with dissociative identity disorder, and the prospect of him interacting with other MCU heroes is as exciting as it is complicated. From Moon Knights episode 1 onwards, the stories of Marc Spector and Steven Grant will be revealed in reverse order as Steven discovers his origins and ties to the Moon God Khonshu, as the audience does. The comics provide an insight into what these revelations might entail.
As one of MCU’s darkest records to date, Moon Knights inevitably faces both high expectations and lots of scrutiny, and this is reinforced by the fact that he is a whole new character in the franchise. And Moon Knights Episode 1 deliberately avoids revealing Marc Spector and Steven Grant’s mysterious past and their connections to the moon god Khonshu, as well as guarding exactly what the Moon Knights’ powers are. Fortunately, Moon Knight’s comic book history may shed light on some of the details that the Disney + series ignores. Here’s everything you need to know about Moon Knight.
Who is Moon Knight? Marvel Comics Origin Explained
Introduced on the pages of Werewolf at Night # 32 in 1975, Marc Spector was the son of a Jewish rabbi and had spent time as a heavyweight boxer and as a Marine. After leaving his career in the Marines, Spector began to hire himself out as a mercenary until a job sent him to an excavation site in Egypt. While there, he suffered a serious injury and was left for dead. Although death seemed inevitable to the mercenary, he was miraculously saved by a mysterious force that turned out to be Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god. In a vision, Spector spoke with Khonshu, who offered him a second chance at life by giving him the opportunity to become his appointed master. Spector accepted the offer and became the disguised vigilante known by the people of the Marvel Universe as Moon Knight.
Like Moon Knight, Spector was a superhero at street level in the same way as Daredevil, a recent Disney + also addition. For the most part, Moon Knight operated solo, but has occasionally worked with teams of heroes like the West Coast Avengers and Midnight Sons. That said, Moon is Knight (by his own admission). does not a team player and does better on his own. While running his own cartoon, he developed his own rogue gallery and battled a series of unique threats alongside his love interest Marlene Alraune and his pilot Frenchie.
One of the most complex aspects of Moon Knight as a character (and a delicate issue for Disney to deal with Moon Knights) is that Marc Spector lives with dissociative identity disorder. In the comics, Marc Spector acts as his primary, while his altar includes Steven Grant, a billionaire who owned a property he was able to buy for the money he earned from his work as a mercenary, and Jake Locksley, a taxi driver , who had his very own family life. As part of his DID, Marc Spector is not always aware of what his altar has done, and this becomes a central part of his experience and his story, as shown in Moon Knight episode 1.
Moon Knight Powers Explained
Thanks to Khonshus’ decision to rescue Marc and make him his master, Moon Knight was endowed with abilities better than any mortal human. He possesses improved strength, agility, and endurance corresponding to the phases of the moon. For example, when the moon is full, Moon Knights power is at its highest. As Moon Knights section 1 reveals, Moon Knight has a healing factor as part of his link to Khonshu, is incredibly strong when he wears the mysterious armor, and appears to have even more fierce fighting skills than Spector’s military past suggests.
Since he can not always rely on the moon, Marc relies on an arsenal of gadgets similar to the kind of weapons DC’s Batman uses. He carries a wand, crescent-shaped boomerangs, darts, bolas and more. Because of his military and mercenary experience, Marc is well-trained in close combat, perhaps his greatest asset is his trademark unpredictable. For his other superheroes, Moon Knight is known for fighting ruthlessly and sometimes irrationally. An example of this happened when Moon Knight had to go up against Black Knight, a sword fighter who surpassed him in terms of skills, during his stay with West Coast Avengers. To deal with this, he startled the Black Knight by throwing himself in front of his sword. Black Knight, fearful of killing his opponent, retreated and was quickly defeated by Moon Knight.
What to expect from Moon Knight’s future in MCU
For Moon Knight’s MCU debut with Oscar Isaac, audiences can certainly expect a level of violence and darkness unprecedented for MCU. While the Disney + series may not be as tough as Netflix vovehalswhich is rated for TV-MA, Marc Spector’s DID and ruthless fighting style will do Moon Knights a mature, yet fascinating, watch that earns every moment of its TV-14 rating. As for the ways in which Moon Knights attaches to the MCUis the word from its producers and actors that Marvel has offered the new series a healthy dose of creative freedom to explore Moon Knight on its own without forcing inorganic bindings. Moon Knights episode 1 already suggests that is the case, so it may be foolish to expect a future where Oscar Isaac will be a revenge soon. So while Moon Knights is an MCU series and Isaacs Marc Spector may appear in future projects, the main theme of the Disney + series will be Moon Knight himself.
Why Oscar Isaacs Moon Knight Casting was controversial
While Isaac’s status as a well-known actor will help raise awareness for a Marvel Comics character who is not yet a household name, his casting is in Moon Knights was quite controversial. Unlike many of the Marvel stars who came before him, such as Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth, Isaac is already a celebrity on the A-list, meaning he may not be so free to put his character at the center; Marc Spector may end up playing second violin to Oscar Isaac. Likewise some of Moon Knights Oscar Isaac casting problems stems from fans’ concerns that Isaac, whose roles tend to master more subtle acting, may not fit well to illustrate the high-energy, chaotic range of Moon Knights DID changes. Finally, the fact that Oscar Isaac is not a Jew raises the question of why he was chosen to play a character whose Jewish identity is central to his bow and development. Despite all this controversy, Isaac’s fame will certainly bring Moon Knights lots of attention one way or the other.
