Wordle is now fully embedded in people’s morning rituals (or for those who are extra eager, it has become a 12.01 tradition).
The game remains as popular as ever after it was blown up earlier this year, and is still free to play on it New York Times website, at least so far.
Today’s Wordle is the 277th edition (for yesterday’s answer, click here). If you have not tried it yet and do not want to know the answer, look away now.
What is Wordle?
The game now has millions of players and has instantly become recognizable on social media, where people share their results in the form of small green, yellow and white (or black, if you play in dark mode) squares.
What is today’s Wordle answer?
OK, this is your last chance to avoid spoilers, so if you do not want to know the answer yet, leave this page immediately. Do not say we did not warn you.
The Wordle 276 answer for Wednesday, March 23 is … PURGE.
While the meaning of the word will no doubt be familiar to many of you, the Cambridge Dictionary generally defines it as “getting rid of something unwanted, harmful, or evil.”
Cleansing has the more specific meaning of “getting rid of people from an organization because you do not agree with them” or “removing names from an official list, sometimes in a way that is not legal”.
It’s by no means the most obscure Wordle answer, but purge still has the potential to look you up, as “rge” is not the most obvious ending to a word.
But if you can figure out the end well in advance, you should be able to get there (even if you go for “surge” first …).
How do I play Wordle?
You can play Wordle online, either on a computer or mobile device, right here.
Start by entering a five-letter word and press enter.
The letters then either turn green, yellow or remain blank.
Here’s what these colors mean:
- Green – you have put the right letter in the right place
- Yellow – the letter is in the word, but somewhere else
- Blank – the letter is not in the word
You can use your previous guesses to inform yourself of the next guess, and try to guess the word within six attempts.
When you finish the game, you will have the opportunity to share your score on social media.
Are there any tips to win?
Everyone has their own strategies, but there are a few golden rules that are worth remembering if you want the best chance of winning.
First, you will start with words that contain many common letters. Many players like to use many vowels early, as well as regular consonants like R, S and T.
Various experts, ranging from linguistics professors to mathematicians and computer scientists, have weighed what the best starting word is.
A computer scientist who goes by the name crvlwalnek on TikTok looked in Wordle’s source file to analyze the frequency of each letter in winning answers and found that the best starting word was “later”.
Other starters people have vouch for include:
Another good tip is not to use duplicate letters early. For example, it is not optimal to start with a word like “awake” as it uses two As.
Sometimes you may want to ignore your previous guesses to remove some letters. However, Wordle also has a “hard mode” which prevents you from doing this. You can access this by tapping the settings icon at the top right.
Finally, it is important to think of common conventions when guessing words. For example, there are lots of words that end in -ICK or start with an SH-. Go through the alphabet while making your guesses and see what works phonetically and you will be rewarded with the satisfying green squares.
