We are definitely looking for a medal in the Thomas Cup final: Chirag Shetty

Indian men’s badminton team have a realistic chance of securing a medal in the Thomas Cup final, believes top doubles player Chirag Shetty, who is planning a lively spectacle at the prestigious event after missing the Sudirman Cup due to injury.

Just weeks before heading to the Sudirman Cup, Chirag had stretched his abdominal muscles, forcing him to skip the mixed team championships and he is eager to return to the pitch for the Thomas Cup, which will be his first event. since the Tokyo Olympics.

The rescheduled Thomas and Uber Cup finals, the men’s and women’s team tournaments respectively, will take place October 9-17 in Aarhus, Denmark.

“Two weeks before going to the Sudirman, I pulled my abs and decided to skip the Sudirman Cup. But I’m in good shape now and I’m really looking forward to the Thomas Cup final, ”Chirag, half of the world No. 10 pair, told PTI in an interview.

India were drawn against defending champions China, the Netherlands and Tahiti in Group C and Chirag said they “definitely have a chance” of coming back with a medal.

“We have strong doubles pairs, not just strong singles this time around. So we can also win a medal. We are definitely in the race for a medal. The last team champion we played was the Asian team championship and we ended up with a bronze medal so I think we have the team to win a medal, ”he said.

“Looking at the draw, we should get to the quarter-finals first and then step up our game to aim for the medal.”

Chirag said one of the reasons he pulled out of the Sudirman Cup was that he didn’t want to make the injury worse considering they have back-to-back tournaments lined up for the rest of the year.

“At first I thought it was just normal blood pressure, so the physio told me to rest for two days but the pain was still there, so later he was diagnosed it would take another six days, so since I couldn’t train, I decided it was better to skip this one, ”he said.

“Until the last moment I was supposed to go, but there are still three tournaments after the Sudirman Cup, so playing five weeks without training wouldn’t make sense, I could have made the injury worse. So I decided to focus on the Thomas Cup.

Chirag and his men’s doubles partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy are currently not training under the guidance of Danish doubles head coach Mathias Boe, whose contract expired after the Olympics.

“We wanted Boe to continue but he had other commitments. He won’t be able to be here full time so his contract cannot be extended. BAI was also happy with his performance, so officials are still trying to find a way. and are also looking for some new coaches, ”Mumbaikar said.

Chirag and Satwik put in a superlative performance, winning two of the three matches in the group stage of the Olympics, but unfortunately still couldn’t qualify after the number of games won was taken into account.

“It was quite frustrating to go out like that. I think we gave everything in these three matches. Before the tournament we would have looked to win two and we did, but nobody would have expected it to happen that way, ”he said.

Chirag and Satwik are now eyeing a good show in upcoming events, especially the World Championships in December.

“We play in Denmark and France after the Thomas Cup, then there are two events in Indonesia. If we do well, we can also qualify for the World Tour finals. But the main priority would be the world championships, ”he signed.

The world championships will be held in Huelva, Spain, from December 12 to 19.
