Violence in Lakhimpur Kheri: After 24 hours of detention, Priyanka Gandhi, Deepender Hooda arrested
More than 24 hours after keeping her at a local guesthouse, Sitapur police officially arrested Congress Secretary General Priyanka Gandhi and at least 10 others on Tuesday for “preventing the commission of known crimes.” “.
Priyanka had been arrested on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people died after a car belonging to Union MoS Home Ajay Mishra Teni allegedly ran over protesting farmers, sparking a clash.
In addition to Priyanka Gandhi, those arrested include Congress Leader Deepender Singh Hooda, UP State Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu and the MLC Party Deepak Singh. The arrest was made under Article 151 (arrest to prevent the commission of knowledge offenses) of the CrPC.
“A total of 11 people were arrested by us. At around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, Priyanka ji was arrested on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri. We told him that you should not go because the situation is not good and Article 144 CrPC is in force. She did not listen to us and in the presence of appropriate security, we had to take her to a local guesthouse, ”said Brijesh Kumar Tripathi, Hargaon station agent, adding that further action will be decided by senior officials.
Earlier today, Priyanka released a video statement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting Lucknow, and asked if he had seen a video allegedly of the Lakhimpur incident. She then released the video, which shows what appears to be a Mahindra Thar coming from behind and crushing a group of protesters marching on a road.
“This video shows your minister’s son mowing down farmers under his vehicle. Watch this video and tell the country why this minister hasn’t been suspended and why the boy hasn’t been arrested yet. You have kept opposition leaders like me under arrest without any orders from the FIR, and I want to know why this person is free, ”she asked.
“Today, when you sit on the stage of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Utsav’, remember that the farmers gave us freedom. Even today, our borders are secured by the sons of farmers. Farmers have been in despair for months and are raising their voices, but you deny it. I ask you to come to Lakhimpur and understand their pain. Ensuring their safety is your dharma, and the dharma of the constitution to which you are sworn in, ”she added.
Earlier, Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda posted a tweet saying they had been under arrest for 36 hours while those who crush farmers roam free. “These farmers who mow are free and we are in custody for 36 hours. There is mourning in farming families but utsav (festival) is celebrated in Lucknow. I want to ask the people if this country will support those who crush or fight for those who crush, ”he tweeted.
