UP 2022 polls: Congress prepares to publish its first slate of candidates

Congress, which has decided to take the lead in declaring its first list of candidates, will contact its local units in the coming days before finalizing its first list of candidates. In addition, the party has said that women and young people will be its priority when it comes to selecting candidates.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Congress Secretary-General Jitendra Singh, who heads the selection committee, said the nominees’ nominations were being compiled, after which panel members would review the names with the zone level party before finalizing the list.

“We will focus on women and young people. We plan to declare the first list of candidates as soon as possible so that candidates have enough time to work in the field, ”he said.

Sources said members of the electoral committee would likely sit again after the congressional working committee meeting in Delhi and would likely announce the first slate of candidates soon after.

The selection committee includes Rajya Sabha MLA Deepender Singh Hooda and Maharashtra MLA Varsha Gaikwad. Congress Secretary General Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, UP Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu and Congress Legislative Assembly Party leader Aradhana Misha are ex officio members of the committee.
