While Bane infamously broke Batman, he had a plot that went even further to destroy his rival’s legacy – until the Justice League decided to step in.
He may have broken down Batmans back, but one of Bane’s biggest plot was so creepy that Justice League had to step in before destroying the Bat Family forever. In a final attempt to give his life some meaning, Bane teamed up with his mercenary group, The Secret Six, to carry out a plan so insidious that it required almost every hero in the DC Universe to stop him.
Bane joined the crew of anti-villains in Secret Six # 1 and before long he was in a position to provide structure and guidance to the purposeless team. Bane’s time at the six underlined his personal code of honor, showing that he was trying to find a new path and move on from his past as a poison-consuming supervillain. But when Bane learned that he was destined for hell, he began planning one of his most involved efforts to tear Batman and his allies down.
IN Secret Six’er last story arc, “Caution to the Wind” by Gail Simone, J. Calafiore, John Kalisz and Travis Lanham, Bane considers what his ultimate destiny means in relation to the life he has lived. He comes to the conclusion that while cracking Batman physically, the Dark Knight remains alive, healthy and, most importantly, surrounded by people he loves. To make the most of his fate, Bane prepares the secret six for a plan involving the kidnapping and execution of selected members of the bat family such as Red Robin, Huntress and Azrael. Unfortunately, the six’s vision collapses when they realize that their hiding place is surrounded by the Justice League and a little more.
That shows the secret six was sold out by the penguin that the team had recruited for the personal information he had about Batman and his allies. Things only get worse for Bane and his teammates as Batman and Superman (and their collective partners) arrive to help get the six down. The mercenary group had built up a good reputation in their race and the overall heroes were not taking any chances with the six. As his plans fall through, Bane acknowledges the reality of his situation and offers his cohorts the only thing he can; vials of Venom to help them go down and fight. The crew fight one last battle together in a venom-induced madness before being subdued by the combined power of the League. While Bane does not get a chance to crack Batman, he gets a moment that proves to the DC Universe and to readers how serious a threat he actually poses.
As an individual, Bane is a threat large enough to take on Batman, but with a skilled team, Lane becomes worthy of an enemy Justice Leagues awareness.
Black Knight has just proven that they are Marvel’s ultimate X-Men fan
