Surat, Ahmedabad and Valsad report majority of new Covid-19 cases
While new Covid-19 cases appear to fluctuate in the state with 14 new cases on Monday after reporting 23 on Sunday, the districts of Surat, Ahmedabad and Valsad have reported the majority of cases in the past three weeks. Since this month, the number of tests and vaccinations has declined.
Since Ganesh Chaturthi on September 10, Surat has reported more than 140 cases until Monday when 26 apartments were turned into containment areas.
The Surat Municipal Corporation health department on Monday issued a 14-day closure notice at LP Sawani school in the Adajan region after three students tested positive. Another undergraduate student also tested positive at a youth hostel in Kamrej.
MSC Deputy Health Commissioner Dr Ashish Naik said: “We tested 96 students and teachers at LP Sawani School where three students tested positive.”
Valsad district, where the Vapi industrial zone is located, has been reporting new cases every day since September 23, reporting nearly 40 cases from mid-September to Monday. According to a district health department official, of the 30 active cases in Valsad now, five are in hospital while others are in home isolation.
Ahead of the Navratri Festival on October 6, the number of tests fell from around 70,000 samples on September 24 to less than 50,000 samples since October 3. The number of vaccinations also fell with less than two lakh doses given each day between October 1 and October 3.
On Sunday, the state only managed to administer about 47,000 doses and on Monday, the state covered the population with 5.96 lakh doses administered.
Although 2.38 crore of first doses were given in the 18-44 age group, less than a third of those first dose takers received the second dose.
An ICMR study warned of mass congregations to avoid a possible third wave, recording that population density in India has a greater effect on transmission than in the United States and may amplify a possible peak third wave up to 103%.
