Punjab: PAA requests special session from Vidhan Sabha on increased competence of BSF
Condemning the decision of the Union government to extend the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) from 15 km to 50 km in the Punjab along the international border, the Punjab unit of the Aam Aadmi party (AAP ) called this a direct attack on the federal structure of the country. under a big conspiracy of the central government led by Narendra Modi depriving the states of their rights.
The AAP demanded that a special Vidhan Sabha session be called so that a resolution could be passed demanding that the Union government immediately reverse the fatal decision and cease interfering with state jurisdiction.
In a statement released Thursday, top AAP leader and opposition leader (LdP) Harpal Singh Cheema called on Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi to convene a multi-party meeting in this regard and a delegation to meet the representatives of the Center.
Cheema said that by centralizing everything and denying the rights of the state by the Union government, the BJP has overtaken Congress. He alleged that an unannounced emergency has been created by the Modi government and that it is a very big step for the government to have indirect control over Punjab. “Also previously, the Center had enacted black agriculture laws without the consent of states on the issue of agriculture under their jurisdiction, thereby depriving them of their rights,” he added.
He said the decision to extend BSF’s jurisdiction to 50 km gave him the power to search homes and make arrests with or without the involvement of the Punjabi police and under passport laws, customs and NDPS. Cheema said the move will primarily affect six districts in Punjab, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Holy City Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Fazilka. He said that of the state’s total area of 50,632 square kilometers, an estimated area of 27,600 square kilometers would fall under the jurisdiction of the BSF.
Seeking clarification on the need for such a decision, Cheema asked the Center whether drug trafficking was on the increase or if an emergency had occurred and such measures had been taken without knowledge and without. state consent. “Why is a volatile atmosphere created in Punjab before the elections? This move by the Center is sure to create fear in the minds of the population, which can lead to mutual tension and ill-treatment for revenge, ”Cheema said. He said the decision would also have a detrimental effect on the affairs of the Punjab, which was already grappling with the recession as well as new investments in trade and industry.
Cheema further sought clarification from Channi about his recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, asking him about the discussion held on the basis of which the Interior Ministry of the Union had the opportunity to make such a decision.
Further attacking Captain Amarinder Singh for supporting the central government’s decision, Cheema said the captain himself confirmed the Aam Aadmi party’s allegations that he was working at Modi’s request and was in collusion with him. .
