Southampton 1-4 Man City (Laporte and 45 + 2 ′ | Sterling 12 ′, De Bruyne 61 ′ pen, Foden 75 ′, Mahrez 78 ′)

Manchester By facilitated their way to the semifinals in FA Cups to keep alive their hopes of winning the treble this season.

Phil Foden‘s astonishing goal was the culmination of an ultimately comfortable victory that saw Premier League leaders finally get over by a team that has twice held them to a draw this season.

Raheem Sterlingthe excellent Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez also entered St Mary’s Stadium, where the Saints were given hope by Aymeric Laporte’s own goal, which saw the sides equalize at the break.

More from Football

Saints must have feared that it would not be their day when Adam Armstrong rolled a shot towards a post after brilliant work by Tino Livramento.

It turned out to be the case when City headed straight up the other end and when Jack Stephens failed to clear his lines, Sterling was there to punish the error, thumping the ball past Fraser Forster after 12 minutes.

It looked like City would not look back as they, thanks to De Bruyne’s encouragement, broke out at will, but Southampton’s high-energy pass-and-move play ensured there was hardly a dull moment.

Shane Long and Armstrong diligently followed the waist-clad crib Ralph Hasenhuttl’s orders to upset City’s defense, and their non-stop effort finally paid off with Laporte’s own goal two minutes into the first half’s break time.

Armstrong set the ball rolling with a through ball to Mohamed Elyounoussi, who took advantage of goalkeeper Zack Steffen’s hesitation to knock the ball into the goal post, where it was rejected in Laporte.

The Saints began the second half as they finished the first by maintaining pressure on City’s defense. That approach even came to De Bruyne, whose misjudgment allowed James Ward-Prowse to force a good save from Steffen.

The hosts eventually ran out of steam and found themselves behind as Salisu clumsily fouled Jesus right inside the penalty area and De Bruyne’s spot kick struck Forster’s dive to the right after 62 minutes.

Che Adams, on for Armstrong, should have equalized, but thumped a shot directly at Steffen, and it was as good as it got for the Saints.

The foot put clear water between the two sides with a thundering 20-yard strike in 75 minutes before second substitute Mahrez hit Forster with a clever low shot three minutes later.
