Noida: Two men arrested for using dating app to pick targets, steal them

Two people were arrested by Noida Police for allegedly targeting people on a dating app and stealing them.

According to police, the defendants – Deepanshu Chaudhary aka Deepu and Amit Singh – were arrested after a brief meeting in Sector 62 on Sunday evening. They are involved in multiple chain abduction and looting incidents, police said.

“We are carrying out operations to fight against street crime. A barricade was erected in Sector 62 and we found two accused driving a motorcycle without a license plate. We intercepted them but the duo opened fire and we fired in self-defense. One of the accused was injured and rushed to hospital while the other was arrested. We check their criminal background, ”said Ranvijay Singh, ADCP, Gautam Budh Nagar.

Police say the accused befriended unsuspecting victims on a dating app called Blued. They would talk to the victims for a few days before asking them to meet them at a certain location. Once the victim arrived, the accused assaulted her and stole her valuables, police said.

In such incidents, most victims are reluctant to file an FIR, police said.

Police have also found links between the accused and Mirchi Gang leader Ashu Jaat and a feared gangster who was arrested in Mumbai last year. Police said Deepanshu served a prison term for harboring Ashu Jaat while he was on the run.

Deepanshu has more than a dozen cases registered against him while Amit is named in more than two dozen cases in the NCR, police said. Police recovered nine cell phones, a locally made pistol and a stolen Pulsar from their possession.
