L&T fined Rs 5 lakh for violating dust control standards, says Gopal Rai

The Delhi government on Thursday imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the contractor of the Pragati Maidan underpass project, for violating dust control standards.

“During an inspection, we found a lot of dust on the site. The green net installed to control dust pollution is torn. There is no water in the tank of his anti-smog gun. We imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on L&T, ”Environment Minister Gopal Rai said.

A notice was also sent to the construction company asking them to comply with the guidelines or pay Rs 5 lakh per day as a penalty until they comply with the guidelines. If he does not do so within two days, he will be fined Rs 5 lakh per day, he said.

The environment department has set up 31 teams to visit the sites and monitor the situation.

In winter, dust is one of the main causes of pollution in the city.

“We have prepared a solid plan to conduct the dust campaign in an organized manner throughout Delhi. To this end, all Delhi government agencies undertaking construction work were called to a meeting on September 14. Private agencies were also called to a meeting on September 17. We had discussed with them a 14-point agenda. Post which, on September 21 and 22, published public notices informing the guidelines. We have been running an awareness campaign for 15 days now. On October 2, everyone received a reminder. We decided that now is the time to act on the ground, ”said Rai.

Earlier today, Rai also launched the Dust Pollution Control Self-Assessment Portal, which will help government and construction companies closely monitor their sites.
