The war in Ukraine has now raged for almost four weeks and the human cost has been devastating.
But the exact number of civilian and military personnel killed in the conflict is difficult to determine.
Civil society groups, which usually record how many have died, are unable to access certain areas because they are dangerous.
And both Ukraine and Russian official sources report very different numbers of deaths, and the allegations can not be independently verified.
I takes a look at allegations of deaths that various Western and Russian sources have reported.
How many civilians are dead?
Ukraine’s state emergency service said on March 2 that more than 2,000 civilians have been killed but have not released any figures since.
The UN Office for Human Rights announced on Saturday that 847 civilians had died in Ukraine since February 24, including 155 men, 119 women, 21 boys and seven girls.
But in a statement, the human rights office said it believes the actual figures are “significantly higher”.
The port city of Mariupol in eastern Ukraine is believed to be the site where most civilians have died as a result of relentless Russian bombing – which has left it without running water, electricity and limited food supplies.
And last week, an adviser to the city’s mayor said he believes up to 20,000 people may have been killed.
How many Russian soldiers have died?
According to information released by Russia’s Ministry of Defense, 498 soldiers have lost their lives in what the Kremlin calls its “special military operation” – but this information was released on March 2, and there has been no update since.
But Ukraine’s military claimed over the weekend that more than 14,000 Russian soldiers had been killed so far in Moscow’s invasion of the country.
It was also claimed that Moscow has lost a huge amount of military equipment, including 1,470 armored troops, 60 tanks and over 100 fighter jets and helicopters.
Western intelligence sources have also suggested that about 7,000 soldiers have been killed and between 14,000 and 21,000 more have been wounded.
The intelligence arm of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense claims that among the Russian military dead are five army generals and a senior naval officer.
The generals are said to include Major General Vitaly GerasimovChief of Staff of the 41st Army, who was killed outside the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.
How many Ukrainian soldiers are dead?
On March 13, Ukraine announced that at least 1,300 of the country’s soldiers had been killed so far in the conflict.
But Russia’s defense ministry on March 2 had previously claimed that more than 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and paramilitary fighters had been killed and about 3,700 wounded.
Posts on Ukrainian social media have told the stories of the war dead, including the actor who became soldier Pasha Lee, who was killed in action on March 6 during the Russian shelling of Irpin, a city on the outskirts of Kiev.
The Ukrainian armed forces have also documented deaths on their Twitter feed, including Inna Derusova, a field doctor who is the first woman posthumously awarded the title of Hero from Ukraine and who has been widely commemorated.
She was killed in an artillery attack on Okhtyrka on February 24, on the first day of Russia’s invasion, when she was supposed to have rescued 10 soldiers.
