Fourth Covid plug likely in the fall, Health Minister Sajid Javid said

A fourth Covid jab will probably not be offered to the general public until the autumn, says the health secretary Sajid Javid have said.

Sir. Javid said another booster dose would probably not be extended to more people at the moment, but could be as immunity diminishes.

He told ITV’s Peston: “When it comes to vaccinations, I think we rightly take the advice of our clinicians.

“There’s a committee called JCVI and we listen very carefully to what they have to say.

“They look at the data very, very carefully, and their latest piece of advice, as you say, is that there should be an extra boost – or let’s call it a fourth dose – but to focus on those over 75, those in nursing homes, those who are immunosuppressed.

“Now we’ll start with that at the end of this month, that’s what we’ve said, and we’re on our way to that. But we’re listening to their advice all the time if they should come forward …”

But when asked if this would be extended to the general public – not just those considered vulnerable, he said: “I think they will at some point, and they have actually been clear, and their latest advice is that they think that towards the end of this year, perhaps in the autumn, there will be a need to give many more a boost, an offer of a boost, but that advice I am waiting for. ”

It was recently announced that people aged 75 and older, residents of nursing homes for the elderly and people with weakened immune systems will be offered a spring booster.

Dose will be offered about six months after the last dose.

The Department of Health and Social Care said: “Although vaccines are expected to provide good protection against severe Covid-19 disease, protection against mild infection with the Omicron variant appears to decrease rapidly, even after booster dose.

This spring booster is offered as a safety precaution to those at extremely high risk, most of whom got their first booster about six months ago.

“If the number of infections increases over the summer, this booster should help reduce your risk of being hospitalized with Covid-19.”
