Drug and arms trafficking: NIA arrests former LTTE member in Chennai
The NIA arrested a 47-year-old former LTTE member on Wednesday in connection with the investigation into the seizure of 300 kg of heroin, five AK-47 rifles and 1,000 live 9mm bullets off Vizhinjam, near Thiruvananthapuram, last March.
In a statement, the NIA said that Satkunam alias Sabesan, “a Sri Lankan national and former member of the intelligence wing of the LTTE”, was arrested in the Valsaravakkam area of Chennai “for his involvement in trafficking. ‘arms and drugs from Pakistan to Sri Lanka, and use the proceeds to promote and support the revival of the LTTE’.
The NIA statement said Satkunam had “organized conspiratorial meetings of LTTE sympathizers in India” and played a crucial role in channeling the proceeds of drug trafficking to former LTTE cadres in Sri Lanka.
After drugs and weapons were seized from a boat by the Coast Guard, the case was proven by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The NIA picked up the case several months later when the NCB was due to conclude the investigation by charging six Sinhalese arrested aboard the boat.
Later, the NIA investigation led to the arrest of Brain Suresh Rajan, a Colombo resident who lived in Kundrathur on the outskirts of Chennai. The arrest follows an examination of a satellite phone found on the boat.
