Director Denis Villeneuve says that a crucial scene in Dune: Part 2 will be one of the beautiful challenges of his life. Villeneuve directed Dune, which was released last year in theaters and on HBO Max, and covers the first half of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Zendaya and Dave Bautista, the film was a solid hit, prompting WB and Legendary to give the green light in the second half of the film.

One of the key elements in Dune the series are the sandwormswhich is native to the planet Arrakis, aka Dune, and is essential for producing the spice rim, which is the largest known raw material in Dune universe. The sandworms would also become important to the Fremen population, natives of Arrakis, who learn to ride the beasts through the sand. This aspect is teased at the end of the first part of Dunebut will play an even more prominent role in Dune: Part 2.

While talking to VarietyVilleneuve notes that much of Dune: Part 2 will follow the adventures of Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Zendaya Chanis in the desert, which he says is something he is most excited about when he returns to the franchise. Villeneuve also says he largely expects a specific scene involving sandworms Dune: Part 2which becomes “very complicated“and”one of the beautiful challenges“in his life and potentially the film’s greatest moment. Here is his full quote about that scene:

It involves sandworms, which become one of the beautiful challenges of my life. And I know, if I do it right, it will be that scene.

The visual representation of the sandworms has come a long way from their first live-action appearance in David Lynch’s adaptation from 1984. Villeneuve and his team spent a lot of time bringing the sandworms of Dune to life, approach them with biology in mind and try to figure out how a real-world sandworm would function in a desert environment like Arrakis. With the proliferation of VFX over the years, the sandworms were able to be recreated in a way that visually marries them with the live-action footage seamlessly, giving the film a nomination for visual effects for the 2022 Oscars.

With the sandworms playing such an integrated role in Dune: Part 2, it will be exciting to see how Villeneuve brings them to life in the scale, scope and integration needed to bring Herbert’s story to reality. By all accounts, the scene is too Paul Atreides rides a sandworm for the first time will be a larger sequence for Dune: Part 2, as it is a major turning point in the novel and his overall legacy, especially in Fremen. The expectation is high for the second chapter regardless, and to hear that Villeneuve is challenging himself to deliver something amazing only increases the excitement for what he has in store. Dune: Part 2 is set for release on October 20, 2023.
