Bridgerton’s season 2’s explanation for Simon’s absence does not quite make sense

It was confirmed last year that Bridgerton season 2 would continue without Regé-Jean Pages Simon. But his absence is not exactly worded very well.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Bridgerton season 2.

Bridgerton season 2’s explanation for Simon’s absence does not quite make sense. The end of Bridgerton In Season 1, Simon Basset and Daphne Bridgerton welcomed a child together and ended their story in more ways than one. And while it was determined that Netflix’s romance series would shift its focus to Anthony’s quest for a wife, fans were still surprised to discover that Regé-Jean Page would not adorn the screen like Simon in Bridgerton season 2.

IN Bridgerton season 2, Daphne and Simon’s love story is over (at least on screen), and although Daphne is still very much part of the Bridgerton family, the key characters in the new season are Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma, who has arrived in London from India and who is immediately thrown into Anthony’s orbit. To be sure, Bridgerton season 2 does not forget Simon at all. Just because he’s not on screen does not mean he’s been thrown aside, never to be mentioned or anything.

However, the reasons for Simon’s absence are not given. He’s not on a business trip, nor has he had a quarrel with Ton and the Bridgertons. An apology for why he does not show up for important events – such as Anthony’s wedding or Bridgerton’s ball in episode 4 – does not make sense, precisely because of the lack of information. After all, he’s part of the Bridgerton family now, and his presence is likely to be expected for the social season and for relevant events, especially given that he and Anthony are friends. In season 2 episode 1, “Capital R Rake”, Daphne returns to her family’s home to watch Sister Eloise’s debut for the tone’s social season, claiming she left her husband and child at home to be there for the significant occasion. It works at the moment – that is, if Daphne had stayed in Mayfair without going home to her new family.

bridgerton season 2 simon

Daphne reappears throughout Bridgerton season 2, but it’s always without Simon. August, Daphne and Simon’s son, also appear a few times, and the eldest Bridgerton daughter briefly discusses her marriage to Simon with her mother Violet. But that’s about it. Simon is obviously still nearby, alive and reportedly doing well, but there is not much of an explanation for his lack of presence on screen. In the season 2 finale, Daphne reveals that six months of being away is not something for a newlywed couple. The first comment was about Anthony and Kate, but Daphne’s response suggests that Simon has also been traveling. In one case, Daphne’s own absence is explained by a coughing baby that August has developed, but still nothing clear about Simon.

In the end, the lack of Simon in Bridgerton season 2 does not derail the story, nor does his absence feel deep as there is a new love story unfolding. However, the romance series never quite gives a concrete justification for this the Duke’s continued absence does not fit into the story and makes his disappearance even more strange. Simon is still very much a part of Bridgertons world, even though he’s not on screen, but the series could have done a better job of explaining why he’s not in season 2.
