BJP MP writes to BMC commissioner to stop construction of cycle path
PROTEST AGAINST the Lake Powai cycle path project received the support of BJP MP Manoj Kotak.
Kotak wrote to city commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Thursday asking him to stop construction work as it could destroy the biodiversity of Lake Powai, which is also home to Indian swamp crocodiles.
Kotak also suggested that BMC should take action for the preservation and conservation of the lake’s ecology.
“Lake Powai is a heritage body of water. The BMC is expected to stop construction work and instead complete work on the old cycle path project near the water pipes. Residents of Powai have raised concerns about the ongoing bike path project.
The civic body should take action to stop the discharge of sewage into the lake, ”Kotak said in his letter.
Residents and activists opposed the ongoing construction of a cycle path in Lake Powai.
They are concerned that this will impact the habitat of crocodiles. Stalin D of the NGO Vanashakti had filed a complaint against the work with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
Kotak said the company should work on cleaning and rejuvenating the lakes so that tourist spots can be developed.
“The civic organization faces financial constraints and it is not appropriate to spend millions of dollars on a bike path project. Cleanliness measures must be taken, ”Kotak said.
